PocketPhonics is an educational app designed to teach young children the basics of reading and writing. It is widely used in elementary schools, pre-schools, and homes, and is aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Independent research has found that children learn nine times faster using PocketPhonics compared to traditional classroom lessons.

According to 148apps.com, PocketPhonics is surprisingly effective in teaching kids letter sounds, first words, and handwriting skills. The app has received positive reviews from various reputable sources, including the New York Times and everythingmom.com.

The app consists of 12 groups of letter sounds, each followed by storybooks that incorporate those sounds. Children are able to read storybooks that are suitable for their skill level. While the phonics levels are included in the price of the basic edition, the storybooks are available for an additional cost. The full edition, called PocketPhonics Stories, includes the storybooks in the price.

Phonics instruction plays a crucial role in helping children learn how to read by understanding the sounds that letters make. Research from the National Reading Panel has shown that children who receive phonics instruction perform better in reading and spelling.

In the first group of letter sounds, children must master six sounds before they can start reading their first storybook. Most children aged 4 and up are able to read their first storybook within 10 weeks if they use the app for 15 minutes every day.

PocketPhonics provides a way for parents and teachers to easily monitor children's progress online. When a child completes a task, teachers and parents receive a certificate by email.

One of the app's features allows children to tap on an unfamiliar word in a story, and the app will sound out the letters to help them understand what the word says. They can tap again to hear the actual word and see a corresponding picture. Additionally, the app tests children on key words as they read a story, and quizzes them on all new words at the end of the story.

By using PocketPhonics, children develop important skills including writing letters, recognizing 72 letter sounds, blending letter sounds together to make words, and selecting the written form of a heard word.

The app is available for a one-time purchase that includes the phonics levels. However, additional storybooks can be purchased separately. Monthly and annual subscriptions are also available for unlimited access to all books for an unlimited number of children. Subscribers also gain access to new books as they are added. The subscription automatically renews each month or year, but can be easily turned off through the Settings app.

The app's privacy policy and terms of use can be found at appsinmypocket.com/privacy and appsinmypocket.com/terms, respectively.
